High-voltage partial discharge (PD) tests require calibration of PD measurement systems connected to test objects. Calibration is performed using PD calibrators, which provide known values of the apparent charge q0. Traceability of PD quantities is presently provided by a number of National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) by using calibration systems for PD calibrators. This comparison enhances the confidence of these PD calibrator calibrations system and ensures the integrity of the traceability of the PD measurements in participating economies. A set of travelling reference PD calibrators was circulated among the participating laboratories. Each laboratory determined the parameters of the step voltage and charge output using their own measurement procedures. The PD calibrator is a step voltage source in series with a small injection capacitor that produces a very short current pulse. The charge of the current pulse is proportional to the capacitance of the series capacitor and to the value of the step voltage. The step must be sufficiently fast and stable. IEC 60270 has assigned requirements for the pulse shape. Typical calibrators do not allow for direct measurement of the internal step voltage of the calibrator. Thus, values are measured externally and are thereby influenced by the measurement circuit (method) and associated equipment.
