Zusammenfassung Noise measurements play an important role in the determination of environmental noise exposure to humans. Since the proliferation of green energy generation is accompanied by serious concerns about low-frequency noise and infrasound emission, reliable and traceable sound measurements are an important issue for legitimating and improving acceptance of installed energy converters. Calibration of sensors is one of the basic elements for a traceable and reliable quantitative characterisation of a noise situation on-site. Two novel calibration techniques were established at Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, the National Metrology Institute of Germany. A primary method exploits the change of hydrostatic pressure with altitude by moving the device under test on a perpendicular circular orbit subjecting it to a periodic pressure change. A secondary calibration technique produces a homogeneous sound field in a large, closed tube where reference sensors and devices under test can be mounted in parallel for a simultaneous measurement. This allows the calibration of a wide range of sensors including microbarometers, sound level meters and microphones. Recently, the calibration technology has become a part of the metrological service of PTB and is offered to customers all over the world.
