Zusammenfassung The FLASH Radiotherapy & Particle Therapy conference, held 1st-3rd December 2021 (FRPT2021) was initially organized to be in-person in Vienna, Austria. However, it was instead held online, following shutdown of Austrian borders due to COVID-19 shortly before the event.  FRPT2021 aimed to support the growth of a worldwide community of scientists and professionals interested in FLASH radiotherapy using protons, electrons, heavier charged ions and photons. It brought together researchers and students with professionals working in clinical oncology and provided a multidisciplinary forum to discuss the latest advancements in this rapidly developing field. The main topics were FLASH radiation modalities, FLASH mechanisms and FLASH in the clinic, so covering basic science, through preclinical research and combining these with translational applications, treatment methods and clinical trials. FRPT2021 was developed in collaboration with EU projects UHDpulse (http://uhdpulse-empir.eu/) [2] and INSPIRE [https://protonsinspire.eu/]. The meeting attracted more than 700 participants from more than 40 countries. The delegates’ interests and expertise encompassed physics, modeling, chemistry, biology and medicine, making the discussions and scientific exchanges intense and wide-ranging. The size of the meeting and the extensive discussions reflected the tremendous current interest in FLASH and the vitality of the topic across the research and clinical radiation community. In this special issue of Radiotherapy & Oncology, some original articles and review papers selected from the meeting are presented.
