Zusammenfassung In industry, gear measurement on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) is done almost exclusively using scanning mode. Scanning is not only much more time-efficient than conducting measurements in single-point probing mode, it also senses the features being measured with a much higher measuring point density. The scanning process, however, does induce some additional uncertainty contributions due to dynamic effects which might increase the measurement uncertainty. But in light of the tight manufacturing tolerances specified in international standards, the aim must instead be to reduce measurement uncertainty. This is why PTB has up to now only provided gear measurement standard calibration by means of single-point probing. Recently, PTB thoroughly reworked its calibration routines by implementing the advanced scanning technology developed by CMM manufacturers. It then undertook research into the advantages and disadvantages of scanning and studied how these affect gear calibrations. Measurement strategies involving the varying of scanning parameters such as measuring speed, point density and filtering were developed to enable high reproducibility and accuracy when using the scanning mode. In addition, a suitable calibration strategy was applied that minimizes systematic deviations in the measuring process. Measurement series based on gear measurement standards were carried out on medium to large-sized gears. These have proven that the appropriate measurement procedure is capable of achieving the same low measurement uncertainty attained with single-point probing. Consideration was given here to the measurands of slope deviation, form deviation and total deviation of profile and helix. This paper compares and analyzes the gear calibration results obtained from CMMs using both the single-point mode and the scanning mode. It further investigates the different uncertainty contributions of the scanning mode and ways of minimizing them. Finally, the measurement uncertainty budget is presented along with an outlook to further investigations of the task-specific advantages and challenges of scanning.
