| Zusammenfassung | The problem of combining random and systematic uncertainties is investigated analytically, interpreting the (constant) systematic uncertainty in a measurement series as a special outcome of a random variable. By statistical methods confidence limits for the mean are constructed for two models for the probability density of the systematic component. If there are more than three systematic components involved, a rectangular density for each of them leads to approximately a Gaussian density for the whole set yielding confidence limits proposed by S. Wagner in case of large sample sizes. A “Dirac-Delta-Function” model giving upper bounds for the total uncertainty leads to modifications in the confidence limits commonly used. Emphasis is laid on the different sample spaces for the “random” and “systematic” components. |
