| Zusammenfassung | New methods of measuring the optical transfer function (O.T.F.) have been developed during the past few years, and some procedures have been published for correlating the results of measurement and calculation with subjective tests of image quality. It is often more convenient, for production and design purposes, to measure other quantities depending on various parameters, such as (a) constructional details, radius, refractive index, dispersion, etc; (b) geometrico-optical aberrations ; and (c) wave aberrations, interferometer tests, etc. There is no difficulty in relating the results of such measurements to production and manufacturing tolerances. Image quality, however, is the final criterion and for this purpose the O.T.F. is most suitable. Tests have therefore been made with existing lenses to show the influence of different kinds of error of measurement on the O.T.F., and a table has been compiled to show the tolerances corresponding to a just-recognizable difference of subjective image quality. The experimental examples show that for the more complicated and large aperture systems, centring and defocusing errors are often more harmful than the random errors in the testing processes. |
