Zusammenfassung The energy efficient inverter-fed permanent magnet synchronous machine with the “Increased Safety” ignition protection classification for safe operation in hazardous areas has been successfully tested. Several possible ignition sources that might cause the ignition of explosive atmospheres in the chemical or mining industries have been considered during the testing of the PMSM. Thermal ignition from a localized hot surface or the electrical arc as specific sources of ignition of explosive atmospheres have been studied and tested. The mechanical, electrical and thermal issues in the PMSM have been identified and the frequency-converter drive parameter has been correctly measured and interpreted ensuring explosion protection. From temperature measurement tests, it was found that up to temperature class T3 certification for the inverter operation is possible for the tested machine.
