Zusammenfassung Magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) open novel pathways in cancer therapy and noninvasive diagnostics. MNP enable therapy concepts where the deleterious action is focused and largely confined to the targeted tumor, so that side effects are avoided or at least reduced. These therapies require a thorough knowledge of the physical properties of the nanoparticles, which can be obtained by sophisticated magnetic measurement techniques, such as magnetorelaxometry (MRX) or magnetic particle spectroscopy (MPS). On the basis of These techniques, MNP imaging techniques have emerged, that is, in particular, magnetorelaxometry imaging (MRXI) and magnetic particle imaging (MPI). These techniques allow for quantitative detection of MNP tailored to therapeutic applications providing information that is indispensible for their successful in vivo application in cancer therapy. Here, we give an overview on the therapeutic concepts of magnetic drug targeting and hyperthermia, the measurement techniques for their characterization, MRX and MPI, and the imaging modalities, MRXI and MPI.
