| Zusammenfassung | This paper gives a survey of the development of new international standards for mechanical explosion protection, of the changes made to the former European standards and, in particular, of the international requirements for the marking of equipment, and it points out the consequences and the action that will arise from the new standards for the manufac-turers and users of mechanical equipment and, in particular, for pump manufacturers. In the ideal case, international standards allow the free movement of equipment worldwide, without any country-specific adaptations becoming necessary. The advantages of such international technology convergence are: considerable savings in cost and time, improved compatibility, increased transparency with regard to the suitability and safety of equipment and, ultimately, more reliable legal certainty. With the establishment of the ISO subcommit-tee SC31M "Non-electrical equipment and protective systems for explosive atmospheres" under the auspices of the IEC, the two organizations have created the conditions for es-tablishing a consistent series of international standards for explosion protection. In the medium and long term, this will facilitate access to the global market. It is, however, not always easy to implement the standardization program and to achieve consensus in tech-nical issues. Whereas the standard ISO 80079-36, "Non-electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres - Basic method and requirements", is the successor to the European stan-dard EN 13463-1, the standard ISO 80079-37, "Non-electrical equipment for explosive at-mospheres - Non-electrical type of protection constructional safety 'c', control of ignition source 'b', liquid immersion 'k' ", combines the requirements for the three most frequently used - and typical - types of protection for non-electrical equipment in one standard and is intended to replace EN 13463, parts 5, 6 and 8. The explosion protection measures for mechanical (non-electrical) equipment differ from those for electrical equipment. Whereas typical electrical equipment may often contain ignition sources which become effective dur-ing normal operation, this does not apply to the major part of mechanical equipment. If conventional mechanical equipment operates within the scope of its design parameters, there is usually no source of ignition that would become effective during normal operation. As a consequence, there is no need for additional means of protection as have to be used in explosion-proof electrical equipment (e.g. enclosures). When elaborating the European standards series EN 13463, no fixed set of technical requirements was therefore compiled. Instead, an equipment-specific ignition hazard assessment was introduced in which the potential ignition sources and the necessary protective measures have to be specified for each individual case. This approach is also pursued in the new ISO standards. For the typical ATEX equipment that is on the market today, it can be expected that no technical changes whatsoever - or only insignificant ones - will become necessary to meet the new standard. What will be necessary, however, will be a different international marking of the equipment. |
