Zusammenfassung Ultrasonic techniques are more and more used in medical and technical applications as well as in daily life. Ultrasound welding and ultrasonic cleaning are widely used in industry. Ultrasound supports to safely park cars or to repel animals. As a consequence, noise at ultrasonic frequencies is increasingly polluting the environment. Even though ultrasound is apparently not heard, it is known that high-level ultrasound can cause irreversible damage to the ear. A basic prerequisite for an assessment of ultrasonic noise is the reliable and traceable measurement of airborne ultrasound. The measuring instruments should be carefully selected and calibrated to detect signals with frequencies higher than 20 kHz. Due to the small wave-length and the tonal frequency characteristic of a large number of sources, emitted sound fields are strongly directional and interferences generate pronounced local minima and maxima. In the paper novel measurement techniques as well as appropriate assessment strategies for noise at ultrasonic frequencies are presented. Suitable instruments were selected and a measurement system for the characterization of acoustic output was set up, with traceability to a national standard up to 100 kHz. Different acoustic quantities were measured for various ultrasonic devices, such as cleaning vessels or animal repellents. Directivity patterns of sources were determined and analysed in order to better understand typical emission characteristics. These data were combined with recently measured ultrasonic hearing thresholds to identify quantities that are suitable for assessing airborne ultrasound noise with respect to safety issues. The work presented contributes significantly to establish a safety architecture for airborne ultrasound.
