| Zusammenfassung | A European Joint Research Project approved in 2011 with name "BioQuaRT", which is an acronym for "Biologically weighted Quantities in Radio-Therapy", aims to lay the foundations for a new concept of radiation quality that is based on measurable physical characteristics of ionising particle track structure. BioQuaRT encompasses eight European research institutes: PTB Germany, ENEA Italy, IRSN France, IST/ITN Portugal, NCBJ Poland, NPL United Kingdom and PoliMi Italy. The project will develop measurement and simulation techniques for multi-scale characterisation of particle track structure from about 2 nm to about 10 µm (i.e. from DNA scale up to cell nucleus) to investigate at the cellular level how these track structure characteristics correlate with the biological effects of radiation. The sought new concept of radiation quality would impact radiotherapy by enabling improved treatment planning and the development of beam monitors and dosimeters suitable to measure the radiation quality via the characteristics of the ion track structure. |
