| Zusammenfassung | Unlike jets with constant density, the mixing and entrainment processes of transient variable-density jets are not yet fully understood. In this work, the temporal evolution of the jet tip positions and maximum radial spread of transient variable-density free jets mixing with quiescent surrounding air are examined experimentally using time-resolved focused shadowgraphy and laser Schlieren technique and numerically using PDF-simulations. In order to focus on the mixing processes, non-reactive helium/nitrogen-jets are investigated. When comparing the experimental with the numerical results, penetration distances at different times and for different inlet pressures match fairly well. The inlet velocity was calculated to be in the range of 300 m/s to 400 m/s (Ma<0.6). Furthermore, an asymptotic Δy /Zt ratio of approximately 0.4 was determined when the jet approaches a self-similar configuration. |
