Zusammenfassung Of the seven base units of the SI, only the kilogram is still defined in terms of a material artefact, namely the international prototype of the kilogram (IPK) kept at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). The intention of this article is to - support the CGPM in their efforts to inform and alert user communities to the intention to redefine various units of the SI and to encourage consideration of the practical, technical, and legislative implications of such redefinitions, the emphasis being put here on possible consequences for legal metrology (chapters 2,3 and 4), - to present the outcome of the inquiry amongst OIML members and the TCs concerned (chapter 5) - to inform about the OIML statement on the proposed new SI that was approved by the CIML and submitted to the BIPM meanwhile (chapter 6).
