| Zusammenfassung | For the purposes of Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX), a canned motor pump constitutes a single item of equipment with respect to the ignition hazard, i.e. the pump and the electric motor cannot be considered separately for the purposes of assessing explosion risk(s). The unit as a whole has to undergo the conformity assessment procedure. Canned motor pumps are characterized by a compact, integrated unit without a mechanical seal. The can, which is a hermetically sealed component, and the motor casing are used as safety containments. Canned motor pumps ensure the highest safety level when conveying dangerous, toxic, flammable and valuable media. The heat losses from the motor are dissipated by a partial flow between the rotor and the stator. At the same time, the partial flow lubricates both slide bearings in the rotor cavity. This paper will take into account aspects of electrical and non-electrical explosion protection, aspects of the ignition hazard analysis for mechanical equipment, as well as the requirements for monitoring devices with differing normative fundamentals for electrical and non-electrical parts of the pump as a whole. The established type of protection “flameproof enclosure” for the electrical part of the canned motor pump will be upgraded to a new adapted type of equipment protection by “oil immersion”. The range of applications in regard to medium temperature, ambient temperature and temperature class will be extended. The safety concept of a canned motor pump application for target category 2 will be introduced. |
