Zusammenfassung Using a 37-channel SQUID-magnetometer system injury fields of cut rat nerves have been measured for the first time (Curio et al., 1993). The measured dipole moments are initially in the Order of some nAm showing a monoexponential decay within hours. In vivo the ends of a cut or crushed nerve are facing each other, and the currents flowing into the nerve ends are in opposite directions. By superposition these fields may nearly cancel each other: when detected from a (realistic) distance of 50 mm the residual magnetic field has peak amplitudes in the order of 10 - 100 fT. By theory, the injury field pattem in this opposing double dipole configuration should display a quadrupolar aspect, but the experimental study has demonstrated a surprising field pattem variability. Using realistic variations of source parameters this paper now systematically evaluates these alterations of the field pattern.
