Zusammenfassung The experiment Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) operates a telescope/spectrometer in the wavelength range from 500Å to 1600Å. As one of several, complementary spectroscopic instruments to be flown on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), it will start the observations in late 1995. The design is aimed at high spectral and spatial resolution images in the EUV of selected areas of the solar disk, the transition region and the lower corona of the Sun. The instrument capabilities include high-sensitivity measurements of spectral line profiles, Doppler shifts, broadenings, and intensities with high temporal resolution for plasma diagnostic studies of small scale solar activities as well as full Sun images. This is accomplished by a normal incidence telescope design and a spectrometer using an imaging detector. To cover the spatial and spectral range required, a number of mechanism devices are included in the design to adjust the optical components to their optimum working positions. This approach carries along a complex mechanical design which increases the complexity of the characterization process. Here, we outline the characterization philosophy and describe in detail the radiometric calibration plan.
