Zusammenfassung A review of personal neutron dosimetry is given. It starts by briefly describing the characteristics of mixed neutron/photon fields in nuclear facilities and the main detection principles for neutrons, followed by a description of selected personal dosemeters based on thermoluminescent detectors (TLDs), nuclear track detectors, bubble detectors and silicon detectors. Neutron energy and angle responses as well as the main problems in evaluation and use, the lower and upper limits of detection and uncertainties due to photon dose contributions are discussed. To date, no ideal neutron dosemeter exists. All dosemeters have special limitations and their use in different radiation fields needs to be proved in the workplace by experienced radiation protection officers. Results of measurements as gained within a European project (EVIDOS) at reactors, transport casks for used fuel, mixed oxide (MOX) and plutonium storage are shown and discussed. The development of personal neutron dosemeters is still an active field of research. New techniques - Direct Ion Storage (DIS), Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL), Al2O3 track detectors, Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counters (TEPCs) and silicon pixel detectors - are also discussed.
