| Zusammenfassung | For comparison purposes, ignition tests were carried out at PTB's friction spark forming apparatus, using parameter combinations derived from tests performed at the impact spark forming apparatus of the BAM. Although the generating mechanism of these short-time friction sparks differs from that of impact sparks, some common characteristics can be derived. The probability of spark formation, for example, decreases in fuel gas/air mixtures with increasing gas concentration. Ignitions occur after fractions of a second. The ignition of impact sparks requires minimum impact energy, whereas short-time friction sparks ignite the explosive atmosphere only above a minimum, surface-related power density. All in all, the respective assessment cannot be harmonized due to the different spark-generating processes. Assessment of the impact sparks on the basis of an energy criterion seems just as reasonable as the selection of a power criterion for the assessment of friction sparks. |
