Zusammenfassung Long counters are the most popular flat response neutron detectors, i.e. detectors which have a relatively constant fluence response over a significant range of neutron energies. Their high efficiency, insensitivity to γ-rays, reasonable directionality, and good stability make them ideal for measuring neutron fluence over a wide range of energies. They are based on the use of a slow neutron detector (usually a BF3 or 3He proportional counter tube) inside a cylindrical moderator which often includes an annulus of a thermal neutron absorber such as boron or cadmium to suppress the detection of neutrons incident from the side. They are typically about 50 cm in length and 22 cm in radius.
