| Zusammenfassung | For many scientific and technical investigations, there is the need to know the density of water. For example, for oceanology the precise knowledge of the density of seawater is essential for modelling the flow of ocean currents. When measuring this density, the density of pure water is used as a reference standard. In such cases, the density of pure water has to be known with a relative uncertainty of 1 ppm or less. The density of pure liquid water at normal pressure was measured at PTB using a magnetic flotation method. This method uses a magnetic coupling between a sinker located in the water and a magnet coil located outside to determine the buoyancy of the sinker. Measurements were performed in the temperature range between 0 °C and 90 °C. A comparison of the results with newer water density data measured by the national metrology institutes of Australia and Japan and with the IAPWS formulation 1995 generally shows good matching, but our measurements show small differences at the 1 to 2 ppm level at temperatures above 30 C. |
