Zusammenfassung Friction experiments including different materials (steel, stainless steel and aluminium) were performed. In comparison with Bartknecht and Ritter friction times in the range of 20 ms to 10 s (Ritter) and 20 ms to 3 s (Bartknecht) were extended up to 25 s. The criterion for the identification of detached particles as sparks was a temperature rise of the particle above the wear (friction) point temperature. Pressure and velocity were varied, and the coefficient of friction was calculated by means of measured values. Limiting curves, i.e. contact pressure vs. friction velocity, for spark formation were derived from experimental results which shows that the contact time has a significant influence on the formation of sparks. In former papers some materials were described as non sparking materials. The present experiments indicate that this conclusion has to be revised in the case of stainless steel. Mild steel and stainless steel just differ by the number of sparks and the friction time which is necessary to generate sparks.
