Zusammenfassung Many measurement procedures in applied acoustics require the use of third-octave band analyzers, e.g. procedures for the determination of sound insulation, impact noise or sound power. Despite this dominating position of third-octave analyzers, the uncertainties associated with its use are still open. As an example, the determination of third-octave sound pressure levels in a hemianchoic room is considered. At first, the measurement situation is analyzed theoretically based on the fact that analyzers usually comply with the specifications of IEC 1260. Among other things, this standard contains tolerances for the linearity, for the relative attenuation and for the filter-integrated response. Thus it is possible to calculate an uncertainty of the measurement device strictly based on the requirements of IEC 1260. Other effects like the calibration, the positioning in the sound field, the background noise correction and the averaging are also taken into account. In order to verify the theoretical results, some experiments are carried out. Five independent measurement chains with different calibrators are used for the determination of sound pressure levels. Tonal and broadband signals and different measurement positions are used and the results are presented as third-octave and levels between 20 Hz and 20 kHz.
