| Zusammenfassung | Recently the CEN/TC 205/WG 12 Clinical Thermometers has finalised the European standard on clinical thermometers, EN 12470, by implementing the part 5 Clinical thermometers — Performance of infra-red ear thermometers (with maximum device). This last part of the EN 12470 series is defining performance requirements of infrared (IR) ear thermometers. The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has significantly contributed to the EN 12470 series, in particular to part 5. At the PTB a compact and user-friendly reference blackbody has been developed specifically for the calibration and investigation of IR ear thermometers. In the appendix of the EN 12470-5 this type of blackbody is recommended for the calibration of IR ear thermometers. To ensure further harmonisation in the field of clinical thermometers it is planned to elaborate an ISO standard based on the EN 12470 series. This paper gives an overview on the instrumentation of the PTB for the calibration and investigation of IR ear thermometers. The design of the blackbody for IR ear thermometer calibration is described. Special attention is given to the traceability of the radiance temperature of the reference blackbody to the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90) at the low and medium temperature calibration facility of the PTB. The reference radiation thermometer used for the calibration of the blackbody is also presented. To ensure global agreement of the radiance temperatures of blackbodies for IR ear thermometer calibration an international comparison between NMIJ, NPL, and PTB has been performed at NPL. An overview of this comparison is presented. |
