Zusammenfassung Detection of magnetically marked capsules via SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) allows tracking the orogastric transport of solid drug dosage forms with high tempospatial resolution as we have shown in previous work. The influence of endogenous factors, like propulsive esophageal motility, and exogenous factors, like swallowing volume, on the orogastric transport of ingested pills is of clinical interest. Thus, the aim of the present work was to establish a method that allows determining the role of esophageal motility in the orogastric transport of solid drug dosage forms. We performed a feasibility study by magnetic marker motoring with simultaneous manometry. A solid-state manometry catheter was placed into the esophagus by nasal intubation to perform a standard manometry while swallowing the magnetically marked capsules and monitoring the orogastric transport by SQUID magnetometry. We found that these two methods can be performed simultaneously without causing technical interferences. In addition, preliminary data suggest that marked differences between velocities of propulsive peristalsis and the transport of solid drug dosage forms in the esophagus may occur. Taken together, this experimental approach allows to investigate effects of motility on the transport of solid drug dosage forms in the gastrointestinal tract without use of radiation.
