| Zusammenfassung | We measured simultaneously depolarized side scatter of white blood cells at two waveelengths in 38 blood samples obtained from malaria patients. Using flow cytrometry, we detected PCM. Because of their long persistence, pigmentladen monocytes were observed in acute cases, in nontreated patients with pervious fever attacks, and in treated patients. By counting up to 500,00 leukocytes, a high sensitivity to observe rare events was achieved. At both wavelengths (488 and 647.1 nm), PCM appear as an additional, distinct cluster in depolarized side scatter versus side scatter diagrams. Cells belonging to these clusters were indentifed by flow cytometric sorting and by subsequent bright field and polarization microscopy. |
