| Zusammenfassung | The magnetic power loss is the key quantity for the grading of electrical sheet steel. Its normative term is the specific total loss measured in Watt per kilogram. The precise measurement of the specific total loss requires well-defined and controlled conditions, proper equipment and careful calibration of the setup. The existing two international standards specify methods for this purpose using different magnetic circuits and having different systematic error characteristics. This situation is due to the fact that various user circles have different preferences and demands. In short, transformer designers, insisting on historical continuity, prefer the Epstein method whereas steel manufacturers are in favour of the Single Sheet Tester (SST) method for reasons of rational and economical quality control procedures. Standard institutes have thus to provide both, the Epstein method and the SST method in order to trace these measurements back to the SI units. Each method shows comparatively good reproducibility. The measurement of the magnetic properties using a ring sample, which is tedious because of the cumbersome winding of the ring core, is not commonly used (although, physically, the best results are achieved). In our case this measurement is performed as a valuable supplementary source of information about the stability of the electrical equipment involved, since the scatter due to the individual magnetic circuit properties and to the way of inserting the samples is avoided. |
