| Zusammenfassung | The most important methodologies used to ensure that measuring instrument are giving the correct indications are - in legal metrology - type testing and periodic conformity verification, and - in industrial metrology - regular calibration of measuring instruments according to the quality system in use. Both methods are closely related. But they use different approaches to decide whether an instrument conforms with quantitatively prescribed requirements. There are the classical approach of legal metrology that does not take uncertainty directly into account, and the more modern approach that conforms with the industrial rules for proving conformity according to the ISO 14253 - 1 standard. On the basis of a consistent mathematical treatment, the consequences of using these different approaches are presented including the influence on the uncertainty contributions to measurement results using calibrated and verified instruments. When evaluating process capabilities based on measurements, uncertainty has a significant influence on the achievable results. It is discussed which boundery conditions have to be taken into consideration and which uncertainty - to - tolerance ratios are consistent with observed capability indizes. |
