| Zusammenfassung | The globalisation of trade and economy increasingly requires confidence in measurement results of any kind, including also chemical measurements, i.e. determinations of the chemical composition. An important prerequisite for confidence and hence acceptance of measurement results is reliability based on complete knowledge of the uncertainty, which in turn is closely related to traceability. Traceability has therefore become a key issue in the field of chemical analysis, and its establishment, first within a national framework, is an important goal in all industrialised countries. Current developments in Germany for establishing traceability structures for chemical measurements are described. Emphasis is laid on structures which involve accredited chemical calibration laboratories acting as "multipliers" between the national reference level and the working level. Such structures are composed of (i) PTB, the national metrology institute, together with high-level national chemical institutes at the national (primary) reference level, (ii) reference materials providers accredited as calibration laboratories within the framework of the German Calibration Service (DKD) for their calibration and certification activities at the intermediate (secondary) level, and (iii) testing and other chemical laboratories at the working level. Such structures (traceability chains) have been successfully implemented in the fields of clinical chemistry, electrochemistry (pH, electrolytic conductivity) and gas analysis. |
