Zusammenfassung Optical equipment is increasingly used for surveying, communications, sensing and measurement. Often the installation is inside or close to potentially explosive atmospheres, where the radiation may be absorbed by surfaces or particles, causing temperature rise which may ignite a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Optical equipment is used in most cases in conjunction with electrical equipment, for which clear and detailed requirements/standards for use in hazardous (classified) locations are existing. Considering actual research results, a working group (IEC TC 31 WG 8) is dealing together with ISA SP 12.21 "Fiber optics" with the drafting of requirements for optical equipment for use in explosion hazardous atmospheres. The discussion covers the key points "Inherently safe optical radiation", "Protected optical radiation" and "Radiation with interlock cut-off".
