| Zusammenfassung |
The world-wide economic situation can be characterized by the accelerated globalization of interactions among countries in the areas of world trade, foreign direct investments and division of labour. Globalization presents new risks and challenges. Trade liberalization carries the threat of cheap imports of unknown quality and involves the need for local manufacturers to compete with global players. Manufacturers are increasingly forced to demonstrate that their products are in compliance with international standards and that their production process is under control. Certificates which prove conformity to standards, and certified quality management systems are more and more demanded either by regulations or as a prerequisite for supply contracts. Certificates must be issued according to internationally agreed procedures. These trends demand engineers with knowledge about the basic concepts of a technical infrastructure in the field of measurement, standardization, testing, quality, accreditation and certification. Arguments are given why the concepts of traceable calibrations, the role of national metrology, standardization, accreditation and certification bodies should be part of the engineering education. |
