| Zusammenfassung | Although pH measurements are carried out on a large scale in laboratory and industry the problems involved in the traceability of pH have not adequately solved in the past. With the aim of improving the uniformity of pH measurements in Europe comparisons of primary measurement procedures have been carried out under the EUROMET collaboration. In most applications, the use of a high-accuracy primary standard for pH measurement is not justified if a traceable secondary standard of sufficient accuracy is available. Secondary pH reverence materials can be derived from the primary standard buffer solutions by different measurement procedures. Routine pH measurements are carried out using glass electrodes are affected by various random and systematic effects and must be calibrated with respect to traceable standard buffer solutions. The hierarchical approach to the traceability of pH measurements and pH reference materials is consistent with the agreed approach on traceability in metrology in chemistry. |
