| Zusammenfassung | In close cooperation with the PTB, the manufacturers of log measuring devices have recently succeeded in measuring the diameter and the length of logs direct at the debarker exit. This means that the measurements take place while parts of the logs - together with their bark - still are in the debarker. The present work gives an account of this metrological development. Owing to novel metrological and design measures and the use of modern optical and ultrasonic sensors, careful feed of the logs so that shocks are widely reduced as well as protection of the logs from contamination, it has been possible to carry out safe and reproducible measurements in the critical debarker area. This is confirmed by the results of the measurements reported here, which were obtained under difficult but realistic operating conditions. As the measurement is performed in the debarker area, the new log measuring devices allow the times and the cost of construction to be clearly reduced. Thus a still more efficient determination of the volume to be invoiced is possible via the determination of the length and diameter of the logs. Particularly the mobile log measuring devices operating with ultrasonic sensors can easily be transported to and mounted at the places where the trees are felled so that the metrological acquisition of sale-relevant data is possible immediately after felling. The measured data of the approved and officially verified mobile log measuring devices can also be used as a basis for calculating the pay of the forestry workers. These metrological and economic advantages of the mobile devices are at present very important, the more so as the conventional harvesters with measuring function are not acceptable for verification and their use in commercial transactions thus is not allowed. |
