| Zusammenfassung | We studied serum lithium levels and brain glutamate (Glu) concentration in 20 bipolar patients medicated for 3-12 years with lithium. Glu was measured by optimized PRESS at 3 Tesla in voxels comprising the left and right hippocampus. There was a positive correlation between lithium concentration in serum and Glu in both hippocampus voxels. This supports earlier in vitro findings that lithium may amplify Glu release and inhibit synaptosomal Glu uptake. |
