| Zusammenfassung | In an industry project the dimensional measurement capabilities of industrial computed tomography (CT) and its dependency on the process chain applied is investigated. After characterising the previous process chain for a specific industrial 2D CT scanner, an improved procedure is described: Dimensional reference objects are scanned together with the object under test to assess measurement deviations. The paper presents measurements of different reference objects and stresses the importance to quantify form deviation in addition to standard parameters like diameters of cylinders or spheres. It follows that calibrated ball bars are able to assess significant geometric deviation without being influenced by the threshold process (conversion from volumetric CT data to surface data). The knowledge of deviations is effectively used to correct CT data of a specific 2D CT scanner used for the dimensional measurement of cast parts. A first successful article inspection (initial dimensional approval report) of a cast automotive part was performed applying the improved process chain. The authors hold the view that industrial computed tomography has the potential to become one of the most versatile and powerful non-destructive evaluation techniques both for defect analysis (as already known) and for dimensional measurements. The present examinations show that CT systems will in future be increasingly used for dimensional measurement tasks - like CMMs today. |
